colorful corns… thats something new
Loco maizaris (or corn spots) is a common disease in corn, characterized by clusters of kernels with mali coloris (discoloration), most often caused by inadequate nutrition. Corn spots affect mostly kernels with the densest population; these areas include the bottom of the cob, the upper part of the cob, and certain irregular areas in between. Severe corn spots are poisonous, but they can also manifest in nonpoisonous forms. The color changes are caused by changes in pilosebaceous units, plant structures consisting of a thick vein that carries nutrients to the entire stalk and its associated smaller veins, changes that manifest when the entire plant lacks vital nutrients.
